Washing, step by step

A hand-knotted rug is not cleaned like a fitted carpet. Here is what we do, filmed in the workshop.

  1. 01

    Brushing and dusting

Before the water, the dust. The whole surface of the rug is brushed to draw out the sand and grit embedded in the pile.

  2. 02

    Washing with water and shampooing

The rug is washed flat, with plenty of water and a soap suited to wool or silk. The foam works the fibres without harming them.

  3. 03

    Rinsing with a jet

A thorough rinse removes the soap and the last of the dirt. Nothing is left in the fibre.

  4. 04

    Extracting the water

The rug goes through rollers and then into a centrifuge: the water is extracted without twisting or distorting the weave.

  5. 05

    Checking and finishing the fringes

Every rug is checked once dry. The fringes are combed and, where needed, repaired by hand.

The same rug, mid-wash

In this picture taken at the workshop, the part already washed has recovered its reds and ivories; the rest is still under dust and soap. That is what water does, when it is used properly.

Babylone Atelier Tapis is the Belgian branch of Babylone Tapis, a shop in the 7th arrondissement of Paris. The Dakhili family, originally from Yazd in central Persia, has worked with rugs there for generations: selling, restoring, cleaning. The same know-how now comes to Brussels.

Frequently asked questions

How much does rug cleaning cost?

The price depends on the surface area, the material (wool, silk, cotton), the condition and the stains to be treated. Send us a photo and the dimensions: you receive a quote before committing to anything.

Do you collect the rug from my home?

We arrange collection and return with you when we send the quote, depending on your address and the size of the rug.

How long does cleaning take?

Wet-washing means the rug must dry completely before it is returned: the timing depends on the thickness and the season. We give you a date with the quote.

Do you clean silk rugs and antique rugs?

These are the pieces that need the most care: colour-fastness test, suitable soap, slow drying. Describe the rug and send a photo, and we'll tell you what we recommend.
