Rug restoration and repair in Brussels
A hand-knotted rug can be repaired: we reweave, reknot, redo a fringe or a selvedge using the same techniques as the people who made it. Restoration extends the life of a rug by decades and preserves its value. It is done at the workshop, by hand, after examining the piece.
What we repair
- Fringes: remade, lengthened or secured when they fray; this is the most common repair, and the one that stops the rug unravelling from the ends.
- Selvedges: the side edge that protects the knots is overcast again when it comes open.
- Holes and tears: the warp and weft are rebuilt, then the pile is reknotted in the original colours.
- Worn pile: threadbare areas in walkways are reknotted or consolidated.
- Kilims, tapestries, antique rugs and collector's pieces: every intervention is decided with you, out of respect for the piece and its value.
Repair before washing
When a damaged rug also needs cleaning, we repair first: a hole or an open selvedge gets worse when wet. Washing comes afterwards and shows off the work.

Is it worth repairing a worn rug?
Almost always for a hand-knotted rug: a remade fringe or selvedge costs a fraction of the rug's price and stops the deterioration. For a machine-made rug, we'll tell you honestly.
Will the repair show?
A good restoration blends into the rug: same wools, same colours, same knot density. On an antique piece, we can also opt for a visible, reversible consolidation, as in conservation work.
Can you repair a kilim or a tapestry?
Yes, with weaving techniques suited to these finer pieces.
How long does a restoration take?
A fringe or a selvedge: a few days' work. A rewoven hole: longer, depending on the fineness of the knot. The timing is given in the quote.
After the repair, the wash
A restored rug regains all its light after a wet-wash. The two are combined in a single quote.
